The Spider S4 was the last in the line for a classic Alfa convertible first launched in 1966. This is a beautifully preserved and original Spanish market S4, finished in evocative Alfa red, which has had an easy life in a benign climate.
The S4 was a return to form for Pinin Farina, who smoothed out the front and rear of their 30 year old design to give it a new lease of life. Fitted with the ultimate Alfa Spider mechanical specification , the S4 was still a very capable sports car, but the focus of the Alfa Spider owner had changed, so the S4 was positioned more as a relaxed tourer, matching classic architecture to modern expectations and conditions.
The Spider S4 retained the Alfa Romeo RWD chassis layout (including LSD), fitted with all alloy 2.0 litre twin cam engine and 5 speed gearbox. In this series, Bosch Fuel Injection replaced Weber carburettors to improve drivability and lower emissions. The interior was upgraded in fit and finish, this car being trimmed in tan leather remains immaculate throughout. A sporting wooden steering wheel adds to the retro feel, but operates power steering to compensate for wider tyres and assist with parking.
Most S4s were delivered with hard and soft tops, and this example retains both in excellent condition,
A car which can be both a second car and a usable classic, there are few better examples of the Spider S4 available than this one.
