E.R. Thomas of Buffalo, NY was a pioneer of motorized transport who would go on to become one of the most famous names during the dawn of the automobile. From humble beginnings selling kits to retrofit petrol engines to bicycles, E.R. Thomas steadily grew his business, ultimately producing some of the most prestigious and powerful luxury automobiles in America, culminating with the world-famous Thomas Flyer, one of which won the first and only New York to Paris round-the-world automobile race in 1908. Thomas Flyers are among the most coveted of Brass Era automobiles.
From the firm’s early days comes this gorgeous E.R. Thomas Auto Bi. The company’s two-wheeled offerings were advertised as the Thomas Motor Bicycles Auto-Bi and promised the cyclist “no hills, no headwinds, always coasting at any distance.” The earliest Auto-Bi engines were retrofitted to existing bicycle frames before Thomas began producing complete motorbikes with in-house frames. This jewel-like Auto-Bi is an early example featuring a Buffalo-built Pierce bicycle frame and is equipped with a Thomas single-cylinder engine. It is gorgeous in every respect, having been restored to a very high standard with gorgeous brass and nickel detailing, beautiful maroon paintwork on the frame, and wooden rimmed wheels with white tires. It is a stunning piece of early motoring and motorcycling history, and would certainly make a marvelous addition to any world-class collection of rare vehicles or automobilia.
