1952 MERCEDES-BENZ 220 A CABRIOLET

An extraordinary, hand-painted art car using a fully-restored Mercedes 220 Cabriolet A as its canvas. The stunning Earthly Paradise series by the renowned Los Angeles-based silkscreen artist Hiro Yamagata, was born of the artist’s vision to form a meeting of the mechanical and natural worlds – using the curvaceous and finely engineered Mercedes-Benz 220 as the basis for each part of the series. For the project, Yamagata and his team scoured the globe for Mercedes 220 Cabriolet A donors, and had them all painstakingly restored by marque expert Joe Arhi of California, prior to being decorated in their lavish acrylic liveries.

This piece, named “Butterflies and Roses” depicts beautiful tropical garden scenes and like others in the series, makes use of exceptionally vivid colors and flowing, almost psychedelic patterns to contrast the mechanical precision of the Mercedes. After completion, it was used in a celebration of Mr. Yamagata’s art at the 1997 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governor’s Ball as part of that year’s Oscar Awards. It was later exhibited at the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts, and has been in the care of private collectors in recent years. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a bold and striking art car that would undoubtedly serve as the centerpiece of any collection. This vehicle just arrived, and a full description is coming soon. Please contact Hyman Ltd for more details.
