The Bertone-bodied 503 Cabriolet’s official production began in the summer of 1956. The BMW 503 Cabriolet is notable as the first German automobile to have an electrically-operated power top. The 503 also touts welded tubular frame construction, aluminum panels, an alloy V-8 engine, and very high-quality appointments; all of this made the car very expensive to build, and production of the Cabriolet was thus limited to a mere 139 units.

This example is a later model, having been built in 1958. The history on the car is easy to trace as it has been under the ownership of the same family since it was just a couple years old. The owner commissioned a ground up restoration on the car a few years back, and some time was just taken to ensure all mechanicals and cosmetics are as nice as can be. Everything is functioning on this car, even the complicated electro-hydraulic convertible top.
Mechanically this car is in excellent shape. The top end of the engine has just been gone through, with a fresh pair of head gaskets installed and both Zenith Carburetors freshly rebuilt. It starts up from cold easily every time and runs very smoothly. behind the engine the four speed ZF gearbox is freshly rebuilt with all new syncros. The brakes have also just been serviced on all four corners and are operating like new.
Cosmetically this car is stunning. The red paintwork over the aluminum body exudes class and elegance, this car really turns heads everywhere it goes. The car was taken down to bare aluminum and reconditioned at a very high degree, all of which was documented. The brightwork on the car is all in beautiful shape, with the chrome on the car done very nicely.
